Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflorus)

Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflorus) is a hardy, fast-growing ornamental plant known for its feathery, needle-like foliage and elegant trailing habit. Despite its name, this plant is not a true fern but a member of the asparagus family. Its delicate yet durable greenery makes it a versatile choice for hanging baskets, containers, and ground cover in shaded garden beds. With its tolerance for heat, drought, and varying light conditions, Asparagus Fern is an excellent low-maintenance plant for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Distinctive Features

Asparagus Fern produces soft, arching fronds with tiny, bright green leaflets that give it a wispy, airy appearance. Though it appears delicate, it is quite resilient and can tolerate a range of growing conditions. During the growing season, small white flowers may appear, followed by decorative red berries, adding further visual interest. Its cascading foliage is ideal for creating a lush, tropical effect in gardens or indoor settings.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade; tolerates some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining, rich, organic soil.
  • Water: Requires moderate watering; allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity; benefits from misting in dry environments.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-11; grown as a houseplant or annual in cooler climates.

Ideal Uses

  • Hanging Baskets: Perfect for cascading over the edges of pots and planters.
  • Containers: Thrives in patio pots and mixed arrangements.
  • Ground Cover: Creates a soft, green carpet in shaded garden beds.
  • Indoor Plant: A hardy, air-purifying houseplant for bright, indirect light.

Low Maintenance Care

Asparagus Fern is an easy-care plant that adapts well to various conditions and requires minimal upkeep.

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged; reduce watering in cooler months.
  • Pruning: Trim back overgrown or yellowing stems to encourage new growth.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Winter Care: In colder climates, bring indoors or protect from frost.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated by dividing root clumps or growing from seeds.

Why Choose Asparagus Fern?

With its lush, trailing foliage, adaptability, and ease of care, Asparagus Fern is an excellent choice for gardeners and houseplant enthusiasts alike.

  • Elegant Greenery: Provides soft, delicate foliage with a cascading effect.
  • Drought-Tolerant: Can withstand brief dry periods once established.
  • Versatile Placement: Suitable for hanging baskets, ground cover, and indoor spaces.
  • Focal Point: Adds a lush, tropical touch to any setting.

For those seeking an attractive and low-maintenance plant with beautiful trailing foliage, Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflorus) is an outstanding choice.

Charles Soule's Series Continues to Impress and is Arguably the Best of Marvel's New Canon
Format: Paperback
Darth Vader leads the invasion of Mon Cala. With the Empire tightening its grip across the galaxy, Vader is dispatched by his master to the aquatic world of Mon Cala to track down a rogue Jedi who may be advising the planet's king. With the Inquisitors in tow, Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin face off with one of the first open acts of rebellion in their new Empire. Soule is at his absolute best with this series as he continues to explore a version of Vader haunted by his own inner goodness and memories of the past (the book does contain some references to events of the Clone Wars television show, but you don't need to have seen it to grasp the story). Likewise, his exploration of the seduction of the dark side is fantastic with a new Jedi target willing to use deception and war in order to light the sparks of a future rebellion. The final issue of the book may be one of the best Star Wars comics of the entire new canon with Tarkin hunting Vader for sport (on the latter's request oddly enough) across a desolate and hostile planet. The issue isn't what one expects but makes a great deal of sense when exploring the relationship between these two characters (while also explaining why Vader is so deferential to Tarkin during A New Hope). The final addition is a decent annual that sees Vader investigating the Death Star and sabotage of its construction. The annual isn't the best addition to the series (the artwork isn't up to the standards of the rest of the series), but it does introduce some intriguing ideas about Tarkin and Vader's relationship and the events that set up the Rogue One movie.
